How to connect a modem safely to hotel phone lines

Be very careful before you plug your portable computer's modem into a hotel phone system. The higher voltage in digital phone systems used in some hotels may cause permanent damage to the modem or to the portable computer itself.

In addition to checking with hotel staff about their phone system, you may want to check the line with a RJ-11 jack tester. There are also digital phone line adapters available for many modems. Some newer modems have these capabilities already built-in.

NOTE: Some hotels charge you for each call you make, even if you're calling a toll-free number. If you plan to use your modem a lot, check to see how the hotel charges for such calls.
